Cushion Star (Culcita novaeguineae) – Large and Colorful Reef Inhabitant
The Cushion Star is a striking, dome-shaped starfish that adds bold texture and color to a marine aquarium. Unlike most starfish, it has a short, rounded body with tiny arms, giving it a pillow-like appearance. While peaceful toward fish, it is not fully reef-safe, as it may feed on soft corals, sponges, and other sessile invertebrates. Best kept in large, stable aquariums, the Cushion Star is an active grazer that roams the substrate and rockwork in search of food.
Key Benefits:
-
Unique Shape and Color – Dome-like body with vibrant patterns
-
Active Grazer – Feeds on algae, detritus, and sessile invertebrates
-
Interesting Behavior – Constantly explores substrate and rockwork
-
Best for Larger Tanks – Needs space and stable water conditions
Add a Cushion Star to your aquarium for its unusual shape, bold patterns, and captivating movement—but only in setups where corals are not at risk
